The Federal Government has officially commenced the long-awaited reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway, a strategic 700km route connecting the Federal Capital Territory to over 12 northern states. The event, held in Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, marked a major milestone in one of Nigeria’s most economically vital road projects, 9am news reports.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed that a total of N777 billion has been earmarked to complete the remaining 282 kilometres of the highway. The project, which will now feature concrete reinforced pavement, is expected to be completed within 14 months.

Initially awarded in 2018 to Julius Berger at a cost of N155.7 billion with a 36-month deadline, the project stalled after the contractor revised the cost to over N1.5 trillion. The federal government revoked the original contract, citing financial concerns, and re-awarded it at a revised cost of N740 billion.

The restructured project is now being executed by Infouest, a new contractor described by Umahi as “competent and trusted.” Sections 1 and 3, totaling 118km, will cost N252 billion, while Section 2—82km multiplied by 2 (164km)—is pegged at N525 billion.

The minister highlighted the introduction of new features, including solar-powered lighting and CCTV surveillance systems across the entire stretch of the highway, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building roads that can last 50 to 100 years without maintenance.

Umahi praised the leadership of Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, who represented the President at the event, for fostering security and peace in the region—factors that are critical for the project’s successful execution.

“You have nearly a trillion naira to complete this road. You are a smart governor, and I know the president trusts you,” Umahi stated. “This road will be built to the same standard as the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.”

Governor Sani: A Road to Economic and Social Revival

Governor Sani, who played a key role in mobilizing national attention to the project during his time in the Senate, said the reconstruction will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, boost job creation, and significantly improve the security situation in surrounding communities.

“This is not just a road; it is a lifeline for millions across the North-central, North-west, and North-east zones,” Sani said. “It is the second busiest road in Nigeria after the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and has been long neglected.”

He urged local communities to support contractors, ensuring unimpeded progress on the project, which he described as “a major economic artery linking Nigeria’s political capital with the heart of the North.”

With the re-awarded contract, upgraded road specifications, and direct presidential oversight, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is poised to become a transformative infrastructure project for northern Nigeria and beyond.
