The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government. Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, has continued to mark the day annually with activities that reflect the country’s resilience, unity, and progress.

While congratulating Nigerians on the milestone, Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to remain committed to unity and patriotism. He noted that the spirit of resilience that has sustained Nigeria since independence should continue to guide the nation’s path toward peace and prosperity.

He further encouraged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as being anchored on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.

“With the cooperation of all Nigerians, the country will continue to grow stronger in peace, progress, and development,” the minister said, while wishing citizens a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that this year’s anniversary will be marked in a low-key manner.

Speaking at the Pre-Independence World Press Conference in Abuja, Idris revealed that the theme for the 65th anniversary is “All Hands on Deck.”

According to him, the celebrations began with Jummat Prayers on Friday, followed by a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, while other activities will be observed in a modest format.

Idris also confirmed that the National Value Charter a framework developed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) will be unveiled as part of the celebrations.

The Charter is designed to promote national pride, responsible citizenship, and shared values, outlining commitments from the government to the people, as well as the obligations of citizens to their country.

9am News report shows that while the government is scaling down the Independence Day festivities this year, the emphasis is on reflection, unity, and reinforcing the values that bind the nation together.
