In a landmark recognition of Afrobeat’s enduring influence, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Nigerian musician and political activist, has been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame for his powerful 1976 album, ‘Zombie’.
The Recording Academy announced the induction earlier this week, describing the album as having “lasting qualitative or historical significance.” The Grammy Hall of Fame was created in 1973 to recognize outstanding recordings that are at least 25 years old and have made a significant cultural or historical impact.
The award was received by Fela’s eldest son, Femi Kuti, who took to social media to share the family’s gratitude.
“Our father’s legacy lives on. We are honoured to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo Kuti,” Femi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He added, “His music continues to inspire and unite people across the world.”
Indeed, Fela’s music remains a global force, with its bold rhythms, fearless lyrics, and unrelenting messages against oppression still resonating across generations and borders.
‘Zombie’, released during Nigeria’s military dictatorship, was one of Fela’s most audacious critiques of authoritarianism. The album metaphorically likened soldiers to zombies who blindly obey orders without thought. Its message was so provocative that it led to a violent attack on Fela’s Kalakuta Republic in 1977, where soldiers reportedly burned his property and assaulted his family.
Despite attempts by the state to silence him, Fela’s voice grew louder both in Nigeria and internationally. His fearless stance through music laid the groundwork for the global Afrobeat movement, influencing artists and activists for decades.
Fela’s Legacy Lives On
More than 25 years after his passing, Fela Kuti is still regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential icons, whose music shaped political consciousness and cultural identity.
His Grammy Hall of Fame induction places ‘Zombie’ alongside other classic works by legends such as Jay-Z, Cat Stevens, and Santana further solidifying Fela’s global musical relevance.
The 9am News report highlights that this recognition not only celebrates the brilliance of Fela’s artistry but also reminds the world of the power of music as a tool for resistance, reform, and unity.
Each year, a select group of recordings is chosen by a panel of industry experts, historians, and artists, honoring music that has stood the test of time. Fela’s induction adds to Nigeria’s growing list of global recognitions in the music industry.
9am News Nigeria joins millions around the world in celebrating Fela Kuti’s legacy, echoing the words of his son “our father’s legacy lives on.”
