Federal Government Steps Up Action Against Lakurawa Sect in Nigeria

The Federal Government intensifies military efforts against the Lakurawa sect in Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, and Kaduna states, deploying more troops and enhancing security infrastructure.
Lakurawa Sect

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified its campaign against the Lakurawa sect, deploying additional military personnel and resources to Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, and Kaduna states. This renewed action comes in the wake of increasing attacks and the sect’s expansion from its North-West strongholds into North-Central Nigeria.

The Sokoto State Government has prioritized security under its nine-point agenda, taking significant steps to complement federal efforts.

  • Air Support Base: The state has established facilities for the air component of Operation ‘Fansan Yamma,’ ensuring quicker fighter jet deployment.
  • Security Outposts: New forward operating bases and upgraded surveillance systems have been established in key locations.
  • Community Guards: The Sokoto State Community Guards have been created to support intelligence gathering and assist conventional security forces.

Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), Special Adviser on Security Matters, assured that the government’s coordinated actions would soon make the Lakurawa threat a “thing of the past.”

Following the November 8 attack on Mera village in Kebbi State, where 17 residents were killed, the Federal Government pledged to establish more military formations and deploy additional troops to Sokoto and Kebbi states.

  • Dislodging Terrorists: Recent operations have forced the sect to abandon long-held hideouts, with several cattle recovered.
  • Increased Troop Presence: Defence Minister Muhammad Abubakar emphasized that ongoing operations are yielding results, with significant air and ground successes recorded.

Regional Collaboration Against the Lakurawa Sect

States in the North-West and North-Central regions are pooling resources to combat the Lakurawa sect effectively.

  • Multi-State Cooperation: Niger, Kaduna, and Zamfara states are collaborating with the Federal Government to address cross-border terrorist movement.
  • Homeland Security Initiatives: Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Mohammed Bello, highlighted the joint efforts to ensure lasting solutions to the sect’s menace.

Support from Kebbi State

The Kebbi State Government is complementing federal actions by providing logistics support to troops and local vigilantes.

  • Operational Vehicles: New vehicles are being procured to enhance mobility for security forces and local vigilantes.
  • Local Vigilante Support: Kebbi’s vigilante groups are equipped with tools to gather accurate intelligence for military operations.

The Lakurawa sect’s expansion into Niger and Kaduna states underscores the need for sustained and coordinated efforts. Security agencies, state governments, and local communities are working to ensure the group’s activities are curtailed.
