The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched an extensive inquiry into consumer complaints against key players in the banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors. The inquiries, scheduled for December 3rd, 4th, and 5th, will address persistent issues of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential violations of consumer rights.
Sectors Under Scrutiny
- Banking:
The FCCPC will engage with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) over recurring complaints of network failures that disrupt customers’ access to funds and digital banking services. - Telecommunications:
Leading telecom provider MTN Nigeria is under investigation for undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and ineffective customer care responses to consumer grievances. - Aviation:
Air Peace Limited faces allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, particularly concerning substantial price hikes for advance bookings on key domestic routes.
The inquiries are conducted under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, leveraging provisions from Sections 17, 18, 32, 33, 80, 110, 111, 112, and 113. These sections empower the FCCPC to investigate and address practices that:
- Undermine consumer rights
- Disrupt fair market competition
- Create exploitative conditions in service delivery
The FCCPC’s investigation aims to:
- Resolve consumer complaints promptly
- Enforce accountability among corporations
- Promote transparency in business practices
- Ensure compliance with consumer protection laws
Each company is mandated to appear before the Commission on their scheduled dates to provide explanations and supporting information that will enable the FCCPC to make informed resolutions.
The FCCPC has called on consumers to actively report cases of poor service delivery or exploitative practices via the Commission’s official channels.
