A powerful explosion rocked the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State late on Monday, March 17, 2025. The blast ignited a massive fire that spread swiftly, raising concerns over its impact on crude oil transportation and the environment.
Eyewitnesses captured videos showing thick black smoke and blazing flames engulfing the area near the Bodo-Bonny Road construction site. The incident has left a significant section of the pipeline burning, disrupting crude oil transport to the Bonny Terminal, a critical export hub in Nigeria.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, authorities are investigating the possibility of sabotage. Recent threats from militant groups to attack oil facilities have heightened suspicions, especially given the Federal Government’s decision to withhold Rivers State’s allocation amid ongoing political disputes.
Efforts to reach the Rivers State Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, for an official response have been unsuccessful as of the time of this report. Meanwhile, security agencies and emergency response teams are assessing the situation to contain the fire and prevent further damage.
The Trans-Niger Pipeline is a crucial channel for Nigeria’s crude oil export, making this explosion a significant setback. Any extended shutdown could disrupt Nigeria’s oil revenue and worsen environmental damage in the Niger Delta region, already grappling with pollution from oil spills.
Local authorities have urged residents to stay away from the affected area for their safety, while Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the pipeline’s operator, is expected to address the situation in the coming days.
