The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, from all party activities for the next 30 years, citing alleged impersonation, anti-party conduct, and attempts to destabilise the party structure.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, followed what the party described as an extensive investigation into El-Rufai’s controversial claim of party membership.
El-Rufai “Never a Member”
The SDP National Working Committee (NWC) revealed that El-Rufai was never a properly registered member of the party, as he failed to join through the required legal process at his ward level in Unguwar Sarki, Kaduna North LGA.
Despite this, the former governor reportedly declared himself a member on social media, prompting widespread congratulatory messages from unsuspecting party stakeholders.
“Rather than register lawfully with the Ward Executives, this individual simply forged his own documents and self-registered… as if the Ward had no single member prior to his purported joining,” the statement said.
The party further accused him of exploiting photo opportunities with suspended SDP National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and other leaders to validate his false claims.
According to the SDP, El-Rufai, now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), used the SDP’s name in unauthorized political dealings. This included supporting an “illegal” National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and pushing his political agenda while falsely claiming SDP affiliation.
The NWC stated that El-Rufai’s behavior amounted to “gross indiscipline” and was inconsistent with the SDP’s Constitution, values of integrity, discipline, and ideological clarity.
“The SDP at all levels disassociates, disclaims, disfellowships, excommunicates Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai as a member of the SDP,” the NWC declared.
As part of the disciplinary action, El-Rufai is barred from seeking membership or identifying with the SDP’s name, symbol, or activities until July 28, 2055. The decision has been communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant institutions.
This effectively silences any future political involvement by El-Rufai under the SDP umbrella for the next three decades, barring any appeal or policy reversal.
Reaffirming its dedication to principled opposition, internal democracy, and ideological integrity, the SDP called on Nigerians committed to transparency and accountability to join its movement.
“The SDP stands firm in its resolve to lead a movement toward the Abolition of Corruption and Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity,” the party concluded.
