Following a successful run in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that Augustine Eguavoen will remain the interim head coach of the Super Eagles. Eguavoen, now in his fourth year with the team, has impressed the Federation after a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali and a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic.
The NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee recommended Eguavoen’s retention, citing his strong performance in recent matches. He will lead the Super Eagles in their next AFCON 2025 qualifiers, including a crucial match against Libya next month.
In addition to his AFCON duties, Eguavoen has also been tasked with overseeing the Super Eagles B team for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers, a tournament for domestic league players across Africa. His technical crew includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec.
Eguavoen’s retention has garnered support from former international players, highlighting his experience and rapport with the team. His man-management skills and ability to lead the dressing room have been crucial in earning him respect from the players.
Financial constraints within the NFF have also influenced the decision, as the Federation has struggled with unpaid wages for past coaches. This practical move, avoiding the cost of hiring a foreign coach, provides Eguavoen with a significant opportunity to secure the role on a permanent basis.
The upcoming AFCON and CHAN qualifiers will be pivotal for Eguavoen. Success could not only guarantee Nigeria’s place in the 2025 AFCON but also establish him as the next major Indigenous coach, following in the footsteps of the late Stephen Keshi, who led the Super Eagles to great success.
