The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Wahab and Raheem Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Chief Razaq Okoya, for questioning regarding alleged naira abuse.
The brothers are expected to report to the EFCC’s Lagos office on Monday, January 13, 2025, following backlash over a video promoting Raheem’s new song, Credit Alert. The clip showed the duo dressed in white agbadas, flaunting and spraying bundles of N1,000 notes, while a mobile policeman held stacks of the currency.
The video, widely shared on social media, drew criticism for its perceived disregard for financial laws. Many Nigerians questioned whether the brothers would face consequences due to their influential background.
The Nigeria Police Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the officer featured in the video had been identified and detained. Additionally, the EFCC, in an invite signed by Acting Director Michael Wetkas, directed the brothers to appear before the Head of the Special Operations Team at the commission’s Lagos office.
Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, confirmed the invitation in a statement to reporters, saying, “Yes, they have been invited.”
In response to the backlash, Raheem Okoya issued a public apology via his X account, expressing regret for his actions.
“To the Nigerian people, my actions were not intended to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support as I had no intention of raising such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action,” Raheem stated.
The EFCC’s swift action underscores the Federal Government’s stance on naira abuse and the need for all citizens, regardless of status, to respect financial laws. The incident also highlights the growing scrutiny of public figures’ actions and the accountability expected in an increasingly vigilant society.
