The unstoppable momentum of Nigeria’s D’Tigress continued Thursday night as the reigning champions crushed Cameroon 83–47 to advance to the semifinals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, marking their 27th consecutive victory in the competition.

The win at the Palais Des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan was not just dominant it was a statement. With this commanding performance, D’Tigress solidified their status as the undisputed queens of African women’s basketball.

But as the semifinals tip off today (Saturday), a familiar and formidable challenge looms in Senegal, coached by none other than former D’Tigress tactician Otis Hughley.

Emotional Reunion as Nigeria Battles Ex-Coach Otis Hughley

Hughley, who famously led Nigeria to AfroBasket titles in 2017 and 2019, now heads a rejuvenated Senegalese side eager to end Nigeria’s reign. His knowledge of the Nigerian team—its strengths, playstyle, and players adds a tactical and emotional dimension to this blockbuster encounter.

“This is going to be a great and emotional game, no doubt,” said D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama in an interview with Sportainment.com. “But we know our mission here, and we will not allow anything to change that. It’s going to be a physical battle too.”

Wakama, who led the team to a fourth AfroBasket title in 2023, is aiming for a historic fifth championship a feat that would further enshrine D’Tigress in continental basketball history.

The dismantling of Cameroon wasn’t just about skill it was about synergy. From defense to fast breaks, Nigeria operated like a well-oiled machine. It was yet another demonstration of why they’ve been unbeaten in AfroBasket competitions for nearly a decade.

Murjanatu Musa, a key frontcourt presence, emphasized the team-first approach that has defined Nigeria’s dominance.

“We played as a team, enjoying the game by doing what we do best, and this is the result,” she said after Thursday’s win.

Senegal earned their semifinal berth with a hard-fought 66–60 victory over hosts Ivory Coast, showcasing grit and determination. They are desperate to reclaim their place atop African basketball and end Nigeria’s golden run.

This match is more than a semifinal it’s a rivalry steeped in history, emotions, and ambition. And with a 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament spot already secured, Nigeria now has their eyes set solely on gold.

The winner of the Nigeria vs. Senegal semifinal will advance to Sunday’s final to face the victor of the Mali vs. Mozambique tie. For D’Tigress, history beckons once again.

Can Wakama’s warriors continue their perfect run, or will Otis Hughley’s Senegalese squad pull off a stunning upset? One thing is certain Africa is watching.
