Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Davido is at the center of heated criticism following his remarks during an interview on The Beat 96.1, where he described the Nigerian economy as “in shambles.”

In the interview, Davido advised Black Americans considering a return to Nigeria to rethink their plans due to the nation’s current economic challenges, which he attributed to the reforms implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Y’all Black Americans that think you’re gonna get a fresh start in Africa after the 2024 presidential election… you might want to reconsider that dual citizenship. Africa is NOT it right now.”

The hitmaker emphasized the resilience and global appeal of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly Afrobeats, which he sees as a bright spot in the country’s otherwise bleak economic landscape.

Davido also lamented the lack of quality leadership in Nigeria, describing the country as blessed with talent but crippled by poor governance.

The comments have elicited polarized reactions:

  • Some Nigerians accused Davido of making unpatriotic statements that could tarnish Nigeria’s global image.
  • On a TVC morning talk show, a host condemned his remarks, stating:”Education does not guarantee you knowledge, and Davido is a prime example of that. He speaks without reasoning.”

Critics argue that his comments were ill-timed, especially as President Tinubu was in Brazil for the G8 Summit, seeking to attract foreign investments to boost the economy.

Conversely, others praised Davido for his honesty, calling his remarks a reflection of the harsh realities faced by millions of Nigerians grappling with inflation and widespread poverty.

Davido has since alleged an orchestrated plot to cancel his December concert in retaliation for his statements. Taking to social media, he expressed defiance, stating:

“I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”

Davido’s comments highlight the tension between public figures voicing socio-economic concerns and the backlash they face when those concerns are perceived as damaging to national pride.
