Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has revealed ambitious plans to expand his cement plant across Ogun State, targeting a total capacity of 18 million metric tons per annum. This expansion will position Ogun State as the highest cement-producing region in Africa, surpassing other major producers on the continent.
Dangote’s announcement came during a courtesy visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun at the state’s capital, Abeokuta. He credited the state’s investor-friendly policies for his decision to return to Ogun, despite past challenges. He recounted the demolition of his Itori cement factory under the administration of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, which led to his temporary exit from the state. However, Dangote affirmed his commitment to working with the current administration to construct Nigeria’s largest port at the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ).
Dangote disclosed that his company had completed two new cement production lines with a combined capacity of six million metric tons at Itori, adding to the existing 12 million metric tons facility at Ibeshe. This expansion would elevate Ogun State’s cement production to an unparalleled level in Africa.
With his refinery in Ibeju-Lekki producing 650,000 barrels of petroleum daily, and Nigeria now self-sufficient in fertilizer and cement, Dangote reiterated his vision of making the country self-reliant in its consumption needs. He also appreciated the cooperation of traditional rulers and the people of Itori, whose support has facilitated the smooth operations of his projects.
Amosun Responds: “I Won’t Be Compromised”
In response to Dangote’s claims about the demolition of his factory, former Governor Amosun refuted any wrongdoing, asserting that the actions were carried out in line with state regulations. Amosun emphasized that no one could bully or blackmail him, stressing that adherence to due process was key during his administration.
He challenged Dangote to provide evidence of necessary approvals for the demolished structures, asserting that no investor should operate above the law. Amosun highlighted his administration’s achievements in attracting over 500 businesses to Ogun State, making it the “Industrial Capital of Nigeria” and a top state for ease of doing business.
