In response to recent allegations from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Dangote Refinery has denied claims that its petrol prices exceed those of imported alternatives. Anthony Chiejina, spokesperson for Dangote Refinery, confirmed that the refinery sells petrol at competitive prices, with petrol for trucks priced at N990 per liter and N960 per liter for ships. These rates are lower than those set by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), which offers N971 per liter for ships and N990 per liter for trucks.
In a detailed statement made available to 9am News Nigeria, Chiejina emphasized that Dangote Refinery’s pricing strategy aligns with international benchmarks and competitive standards, countering IPMAN’s accusations of inflated prices. He remarked, “We benchmark our prices against international prices and believe our rates are competitive. If claims of cheaper imports are being made, such imports could involve substandard products, jeopardizing the health of Nigerians and the safety of their vehicles.”
Chiejina also highlighted the importance of protecting domestic industries, citing global practices by the US and Europe, where tariffs are often imposed to safeguard local economies and ensure quality standards. He criticized the lack of laboratory facilities with Nigeria’s regulatory body, NMDPRA, which complicates efforts to ensure the quality of imported fuel products.
This statement reaffirms Dangote Refinery’s commitment to competitive pricing and quality assurance in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, while countering any misinformation on its pricing policies.
