The Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, on Tuesday ordered that Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) tests be conducted on Liam Aloba, the son of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Presiding Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga issued the order while ruling on an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who sought a paternity test to resolve lingering questions over the child’s biological identity.
According to the ruling, the DNA tests are to be conducted in accredited and recognised hospitals both within Nigeria and abroad. The court also directed that both parties, or their representatives, must be present during the collection of samples.

In his application, brought pursuant to Order 8 Rules 1 & 8 of the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012 and Order 9 Rules 8 & 9 of the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009, Joseph Aloba requested that the Chief Medical Officer or Chief Pathologist at the Military Hospital, Yaba, extract tissue, hair, or any other sample from the remains of Mohbad for the purpose of carrying out the DNA test.
He further sought that the DNA test on Liam be carried out at a recognised and accredited medical facility either in Lagos State, outside Lagos, or abroad at his expense.
The late singer’s wife, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent in the case.
Court Proceedings
At Tuesday’s hearing, Joseph Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi from the law firm of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for Omowunmi Aloba.
The application was moved by counsel to the applicant, and with no opposition raised by the respondent’s counsel, the court granted the prayers as sought.
In its ruling, the court ordered:
- That two DNA tests be conducted in accredited and recognised hospitals, one in Nigeria and another outside the country.
- That both parties or their representatives be present at the time of sample collection.
The case was subsequently adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
Mohbad, a rising star in Nigeria’s music industry, passed away in September 2023 under controversial circumstances, sparking nationwide protests and calls for justice. His death has since been subject to multiple investigations, with unresolved questions fueling public interest.
The court’s directive on Liam’s paternity is expected to provide clarity on a matter that has remained contentious within the late singer’s family.
