A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has found suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt of court and fined her N5 million for violating a standing order not to comment publicly on an ongoing suit.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice Binta Nyanko held that Natasha breached the court’s April 4 order, which restrained all parties from making any public statements regarding the case.
According to the 9am News report, the contempt charge arose from a satirical letter Natasha posted on her Facebook page on April 27, despite the subsisting court order.
Justice Nyanko clarified that since the contempt was civil in nature, Natasha would not face imprisonment but must pay a fine and issue a public apology to the court.
“She is found guilty of contempt in a civil matter. Therefore, she will not be imprisoned but fined and compelled to apologise publicly,” the judge ruled.
The court ordered Natasha to pay N5 million into the Federal Government’s coffers and publish an apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page within seven days.
