Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has announced the birth of her twins with her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege. The literary icon shared the news in an interview with The Guardian, where she also discussed her latest book, Dream Count, as well as her views on cancel culture.

The 47-year-old writer revealed that she welcomed her twins months ago but chose to keep the news private, emphasizing her desire to protect her children. She acknowledged that many people were unaware of her marriage in 2009, attributing her discretion to the inquisitiveness of Nigerians regarding personal matters.

Speaking to interviewer Charlotte Edwardes, Adichie said, “You’ve met my babies. I want to protect my children. I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them.” She added, “Nigerians are nosy, they want to know about your personal life. Because of that, I am resistant. I very rarely talk about it.”

Beyond her personal life, Adichie addressed cancel culture, reflecting on the backlash she faced after her 2017 remarks on transgender women. At the time, she had responded to a question about whether transgender women were “any less of a real woman” by stating, “A trans woman is a trans woman.” Her comments sparked controversy, with significant criticism that affected her career.

In her latest interview, she did not shy away from expressing her disapproval of cancel culture, stating, “What do I want to say about cancel culture? Cancel culture is bad. We should stop it. End of story.”

Adichie, who previously welcomed a daughter in 2016, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated literary voices. Her decision to maintain privacy around her family underscores her belief in balancing public and personal life, even as she continues to engage in critical cultural discussions.
