Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly reached an agreement with the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) to take over as the head coach of the Brazil senior men’s national team, the Selecao.

According to a 9am News report, Ancelotti emerged as the top candidate to replace Dorival Junior, who was dismissed after Brazil’s crushing 4-1 defeat to Argentina in Buenos Aires last month. Despite sitting fourth in the South American World Cup qualification standings, the CBF believes that Ancelotti’s leadership could restore Brazil’s dominance on the world stage and end their World Cup drought since their last triumph in 2002.

The CBF had previously attempted to secure Ancelotti’s services ahead of last summer’s Copa America but failed. However, persistence has now paid off, with the Italian tactician set to lead the team towards the 2026 World Cup.

European football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on X:
“Carlo Ancelotti and Brazil have reached an agreement in principle for the Italian to become Seleção head coach for the World Cup 2026. Deal valid from June, NOT after Clubs World Cup. Real Madrid and Ancelotti would part ways nicely with formal steps needed next.”

Ancelotti’s illustrious tenure at Real Madrid has seen him capture two La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League crowns across two spells, including both trophies last season. Nevertheless, pressure has been mounting at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid trail Barcelona by four points with only five matches remaining in the domestic season. Moreover, Los Merengues lost a thrilling Copa del Rey final to Barcelona, falling 3-2, and were recently eliminated from the Champions League following a heavy 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal.

With Ancelotti poised to leave, Real Madrid is already eyeing replacements, and Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated manager, Xabi Alonso, has been named as a leading candidate to take over at the Bernabeu.

Ancelotti’s imminent appointment marks a significant shift for Brazil, signaling their ambition to reclaim global football dominance with one of the most decorated coaches in European history at the helm.
