Breaking News: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded three points and three goals to Nigeria after Libya forfeited their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi. The decision comes after CAF’s disciplinary committee found Libya’s treatment of the Nigerian team, including prolonged airport delays and denial of basic amenities, in violation of several CAF regulations.
In an official statement, CAF’s Disciplinary Board Chairperson, Ousmane Kane, cited breaches of Articles 31, 82, and 151 of CAF’s Disciplinary Code. Libya has been fined USD 50,000 and must settle within 60 days.
The awarded points put Nigeria at 10 points from four matches, reinforcing their lead in Group A with a four-point cushion over Benin Republic. This victory by forfeit places Nigeria within reach of qualification for AFCON 2025. A win or draw against Benin Republic on November 14 would officially secure Nigeria’s place in the tournament finals in Morocco (December 2025/January 2026).
