Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his delight at the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s resounding victory in the Ondo State governorship election, which returned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to office with a landslide.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari highlighted the election outcome as a testament to the confidence voters have in the APC and Governor Aiyedatiwa. He urged all stakeholders to respect the democratic will expressed at the ballot box.
“Democracy is Strong,” Buhari Declares
Buhari described the election as proof of Nigeria’s enduring democracy, stating, “The voters have spoken lucidly and loudly about their confidence in the party and the governor. Their wish, expressed through the ballot box, should be respected.”
The former president further underscored the victory as a challenge for the governor-elect to implement policies that foster:
- Economic growth,
- Job creation,
- Inflation control, and
- Welfare programs to improve the lives of citizens.
Buhari commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and law enforcement agencies for their role in delivering a credible election, noting improvements over past polls.
The Returning Officer, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, announced on Sunday that Governor Aiyedatiwa of the APC secured 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival, Ajayi Agboola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s overwhelming victory underscores the APC’s stronghold in the Sunshine State and paves the way for another tenure in the Government House at Alagbaka, Akure.
