The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made this announcement early Tuesday morning, following an extensive search for a new leader for the former African champions.

According to a statement released on the NFF’s official social media platforms, the federation has successfully reached an agreement with Labbadia, who has agreed to take over the role of head coach for Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, with immediate effect. The NFF’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, confirmed the appointment in the early hours of Tuesday, emphasizing that it was effective immediately.

This appointment follows the departure of former Ajax winger Finidi George, who left the Super Eagles without a coach after a short tenure.

Who is Bruno Labbadia?

Labbadia, who enjoyed an exciting playing career as a striker, played for several top teams, including FC Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen, and Bayern Munich. During his career, he earned two caps for Germany and won both the DFB-Pokal with FC Kaiserslautern and the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich before retiring in 2003.

Furthermore, Transitioning seamlessly into coaching, the 58-year-old Labbadia has managed only German clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, and Wolfsburg. His most recent coaching role was with VfB Stuttgart, where he joined in December 2022 but was dismissed in April 2023 after the team fell to last place in the Bundesliga standings.
