Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed once again, marking the 11th such occurrence this year, as power generation plummeted to 0.00MW. The collapse, reported on Thursday morning, follows the grid’s previous outage earlier this week, making this the 10th incident since January 2024.
At around 11:29 am, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) confirmed a power outage that affected its supply network, issuing a notice to customers: “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 7 November 2024, at 11:29 hrs. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
Reports indicate that, earlier on Thursday, the national grid had peaked at 3,743 megawatts around 10 am but soon dropped sharply, leaving only 2,323 megawatts in operation from 22 power plants across the country. The incident adds to Nigeria’s ongoing power struggles, leaving Nigerians waiting for full power restoration yet again.
Despite efforts from distribution companies and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which has not yet commented on the latest incident, frequent grid failures continue to disrupt daily life and business operations across Nigeria.
