Nigeria has lost one of its most revered traditional rulers as Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, passed away at the age of 91.
His death was confirmed on Saturday, July 13, 2025, by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who described the monarch as a “remarkable royal father” whose reign shaped not just Ijebuland but Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
In an official statement, the governor said, “Under his guidance, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure and community development, establishing itself as a model of progress in Ogun State. His leadership not only enhanced the cultural heritage of Ijebuland with the Ojude Oba festival attaining international standards but also solidified its reputation as a thriving hub of commerce and tradition.”
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs. Over six decades, he championed unity, education, healthcare, and economic growth, while preserving the rich cultural identity of Ijebuland.
His reign saw the Ojude Oba festival grow into an internationally recognised celebration of Ijebu culture, attracting visitors and dignitaries from around the world.
A Double Loss for Nigeria
His death comes on the same day as the passing of Nigeria’s immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari, marking a sombre day in the nation’s history.
Governor Abiodun urged citizens to reflect on Oba Adetona’s legacy of wisdom, kindness, and dedication to the progress of his people.
“As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Oba Adetona and honour his contributions to our country. His unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts,” the governor said in the statement.
A Lasting Legacy
For many, Oba Adetona will be remembered as a beacon of hope, tradition, and development. His vision and courage ensured that Ijebuland remained a symbol of cultural pride and economic vitality in Ogun State.
The Ogun State Government is expected to announce burial plans in consultation with the royal family and the Ijebu traditional council.
