Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen downplays revenge, focuses on securing crucial points in AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.

Austin Eguavoen, the interim coach of the Super Eagles, has downplayed revenge as a driving factor in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Benin. Instead, Eguavoen emphasizes that the focus is on securing all three points in the crucial matches against Benin and Rwanda. Ogasabi reports that despite Nigeria’s recent 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs in Abidjan during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Eguavoen insists that the team is solely concentrating on qualification.

Eguavoen highlighted the importance of Super eagles winning the match against Benin Republic on Saturday, followed by another victory in Kigali on Tuesday, which would strengthen their qualification prospects. The Super Eagles will host Benin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, with the match set to kick off at 5 PM, before heading to Kigali to face Rwanda on September 10.

Nigeria’s performance has been lackluster since the end of the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where they lost 2-1 in the final. Since then, the team has managed only one win in four matches. With Benin and Rwanda also competing in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying group, these upcoming fixtures hold significant weight for the Super Eagles’ broader ambitions.

Stay tuned to 9am news Nigeria for more breaking news and Sports updates on the Super Eagles as they continue their journey in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. Ogasabi will provide you with all the latest developments as they unfold.
