Key figures in Nigeria’s opposition have gathered at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a major realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those present are the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party’s Peter Obi; former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. The high-level meeting also drew other political heavyweights including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Mark and Aregbesola were recently named as interim national chairman and national secretary of the ADC, respectively, as part of the coalition’s strategy to adopt the ADC as its new political platform.
The gathering also includes notable politicians such as former lawmaker Dino Melaye; ex-Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalong; publisher Dele Momodu; Senator Gabriel Suswam; Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party; former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha; and retired Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
9am News report that members of the PDP, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party are among other attendees, signalling what appears to be an unprecedented alliance aiming to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
According to insiders, the ADC will serve as the unified front for opposition parties and defectors, with Mark officially resigning his PDP membership to lead the coalition’s transition. The group is expected to announce more plans for a national convention and unveil a clear roadmap for the next general elections.
Political analysts say the gathering represents one of the strongest efforts yet by Nigeria’s opposition bloc to forge a united front capable of challenging the APC’s dominance.
