Atiku Delays ADC Membership Amid Jonathan 2027 Speculation

Atiku delays ADC membership card event as talks with Goodluck Jonathan over 2027 race spark political tension.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has postponed his planned collection of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) membership card. The event, which was set for August 6 in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State, will now hold later, with no new date confirmed.

Atiku recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party after prolonged internal disputes. His move to the ADC was expected to be formalised this month, but sources say political tensions within the party may have caused the delay.

The delay comes amid reports that the ADC is in talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan about a possible 2027 presidential bid. A senior ADC figure claimed discussions with Jonathan have been “positive,” suggesting he may run under the party’s platform rather than return to the PDP.

This development has stirred speculation of a power tussle between Atiku, Jonathan, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. Reports indicate that Obi’s political allies have gained influence over ADC structures in southern Nigeria, raising concerns for Atiku’s chances within the party.

Atiku’s Camp Responds

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed claims that the delay was linked to Jonathan’s possible entry into the race. He insisted the registration process was still ongoing and unchanged.

“Atiku is a democrat and is not threatened by anyone’s ambition,” Ibe said. “He will work with other Nigerians of goodwill to provide a credible alternative to the APC and President Tinubu.”

Despite the uncertainty, ADC leaders maintain that the party remains open to all politicians ready to “rescue the country” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
