Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday attended a high-level closed-door meeting of African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition leaders in Abuja, signaling intensified political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, held at an undisclosed venue in the Federal Capital Territory, was attended by prominent political figures, including ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, ex-Minister of Digital Economy Isa Pantami, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed, and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Atiku confirmed his attendance via a post on X, describing the gathering as part of a broader “resistance movement” against Nigeria’s ruling elite.
“I am currently at the stakeholders’ meeting of the Coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja. It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land,” he wrote.
Key Resolutions from the Meeting
ADC leaders reached significant decisions aimed at consolidating the opposition ahead of 2027:
- Commitment to Unity: All presidential aspirants pledged to support whoever emerges as the ADC’s candidate after the primaries.
- Party Loyalty: Members holding membership in other political parties were directed to resign and fully align with the ADC.
- Election Preparations: The National Working Committee will announce primary election dates for Osun and Ekiti ahead of the off-cycle governorship polls.
The meeting also resolved to suspend efforts to register the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), redirecting energy towards strengthening the ADC coalition.
Though Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi could not attend, he sent in his apologies and reaffirmed loyalty to the coalition.
The ADC, originally formed in 2005 and registered by INEC in 2011, has emerged as a rallying point for opposition leaders. The coalition was formally adopted in July 2025 after months of consultations among politicians seeking to challenge the APC’s dominance.
Key figures such as Uche Secondus, Rauf Aregbesola, Emeka Ihedioha, Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun are also part of the coalition.
Thursday’s gathering reaffirmed the ADC’s positioning as more than a merger of interests. Leaders described it as a “rescue mission” focused on tackling insecurity, economic hardship, and corruption.
With Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi all seen as likely contenders for the presidential ticket, the ADC is expected to become a major force in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
