Arokodare Strikes as Super Eagles Beat Rwanda to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

Arokodare’s second-half strike gave Nigeria a 1-0 win over Rwanda, boosting the Super Eagles 2026 World Cup hopes ahead of a crucial clash

Tolu Arokodare’s 51st-minute strike secured a vital 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles against Rwanda, keeping Nigeria’s hopes alive in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Wolves striker, introduced at half-time, pounced on a defensive mix-up inside the Rwandan penalty area and flicked the ball onto the crossbar before it bounced over the line. The decisive goal lifted Nigeria into third place in Group C with 10 points, one behind Benin Republic and six adrift of group leaders South Africa.

Nigeria dominated possession in Uyo but struggled to carve out clear chances. Their first setback came when Victor Osimhen limped off in the 35th minute, leaving fans and teammates anxious.

Earlier, the Galatasaray forward thought he had given Nigeria the lead, but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

Attempts from Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi also failed to trouble the well-organised Amavubi (Wasps) defence, leaving the game goalless at halftime.

Arokodare the Game-Changer

The introduction of Arokodare after the break proved decisive. His physical presence and sharp movement created space for Simon and Ademola Lookman to exploit the Rwandan defence.

In the 51st minute, he capitalised on a defensive error to break the deadlock, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations. Despite late pressure from Rwanda, the Eagles held on to claim a much-needed win.

Focus Shifts to South Africa

Next up for the Super Eagles is a crunch clash against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. With just three rounds of fixtures remaining, only the group winners are guaranteed a direct ticket to the World Cup.

Nigeria must realistically win in South Africa to stay in contention, while also hoping FIFA rules in their favour in an unresolved case that could see South Africa docked three points for fielding an ineligible player in March against Lesotho.

If Nigeria cannot overhaul Bafana Bafana, they could still qualify via the African play-offs, where the four best second-placed teams battle for a chance at an intercontinental qualifier.

The 9am News report notes that Arokodare’s breakthrough goal may prove pivotal in reviving Nigeria’s World Cup dream, but tougher battles lie ahead.
