The Action Peoples Party (APP) has claimed victory in 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions in the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, according to results announced by retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, the Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), on Saturday in Port Harcourt.
Justice Enebeli reported that the results for Etche Local Government Area are yet to be finalized, as collation of results is still ongoing. Additionally, the 319 councillorship seats across the state will be declared at a later date.
Despite earlier concerns over the police withdrawing security for the election and court injunctions barring the use of voter registers, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, stood firm that the election would proceed as planned. His stance proved correct as the election was conducted peacefully, with Enebeli praising the process as “smooth, free, fair, and credible.”
The APP’s success comes in the wake of increased tensions before the polls, including an explosion at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Port Harcourt on election day, which caused significant property damage but no casualties.
The APP’s newly elected chairpersons include Vincent Reuben Obu (Abua/Odual), Chibudom Ezu (Ahoada-East), and Mrs. Tonye Oniyide (Akuku-Toru), among others. The results signal a major shift in the political landscape, with other major parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) absent from the elections.
As Etche LGA’s results are anticipated, the APP’s landslide victory has already reshaped the state’s local governance dynamics, marking a decisive win in a charged political environment.
