The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released fresh statistics showing that Akwa Ibom, Kano, and Sokoto States are leading in the ongoing in-person voter registration exercise, which commenced on Monday, August 25, 2025.

According to the figures released on Tuesday, a total of 72,274 citizens have completed their in-person registration as eligible voters across the country. Of this number, Akwa Ibom leads with 5,470 completed registrations, followed by Kano with 5,019, Sokoto with 4,525, Katsina with 4,396, Kebbi with 3,966, and Niger with 3,207.

Meanwhile, Osun, which tops the online pre-registration chart with 474,372 applications, recorded only 548 completed in-person registrations. Other states with low completion rates include Ebonyi (230), Enugu (240), Abia (333), FCT (422), Cross River (509), and Kwara (676).

A regional breakdown shows the North West leading with 24,238 registrants, followed by the South South with 21,130, the North East with 12,213, the South West with 11,175, the North Central including FCT with 11,045, while the South East trails with just 1,473 completed registrations.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, explained that of those who have completed registration, 35,622 (49.29%) are male and 36,652 (50.71%) are female. He added that 54,718 (75.71%) fall within the ages of 18–34, while 30,953 (42.83%) are students.

In a statement, Olumekun noted that the online pre-registration exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, has recorded 2,532,062 applications in just two weeks. However, he stressed that online pre-registration alone is not valid until applicants complete the process physically at designated INEC centres.

“The Commission reiterates that all online pre-registrants must appear in person at our 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide where their biometric data will be captured,” he stated.

He added that registration centres are open Mondays to Fridays, from 9.00am to 3.00pm, and urged all Nigerians especially youths to complete the exercise ahead of the next general elections
