Adekunle Gold: “I Haven’t Rested Since My First Album”

Renowned Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that he has been on an unrelenting grind since the release of his debut album, Gold, under Olamide’s YBNL record label. The 38-year-old Afrobeats star, known for his smooth vocals and unique sound, admitted that no achievement has ever felt like enough.

Adekunle Gold, who first gained recognition in 2014 with his hit single Sade, shared insights into his workaholic nature and hustle mentality during an interview. He traced his work ethic back to his strict upbringing in a conventional African household, where his father’s discipline left little room for lighthearted moments.

Before fully diving into music, Adekunle Gold explored various creative ventures. He earned a degree in Art and Industrial Design at Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) and later mastered photography and graphic design, even branding himself as the King of Photoshop.

“I had multiple 9-5 jobs and freelanced as a graphic designer, but it wasn’t enough. I started a branding company, and clearly, it wasn’t enough. Music was always my end game,” he said.

Despite finally breaking into the industry, Adekunle Gold admitted he never learned how to pause and celebrate his wins. Instead, every milestone led to a greater hunger for success.

“For every win I had, I was chasing 10 more. I didn’t know how to stop. I didn’t know how to breathe, to live in the moment.”

A Wake-Up Call from His Daughter, Deja

The singer’s four-year-old daughter, Deja, recently made him reconsider his lifestyle. In a candid moment, she told him:

“Daddy, you are always serious about everything.”

Her words struck a nerve, forcing him to reflect on his relentless work ethic and its impact on his well-being.

“As dramatic as it sounds, I haven’t rested since the Gold album. Of all the people who have called me out for being too serious, Deja’s voice has been the loudest,” he confessed.

Realizing the importance of balance, Adekunle Gold has now made a personal pact—his 22nd attempt, as he humorously put it—to slow down, enjoy life, and be more present.

“I am a being, not a machine. I’m supposed to be.”

This revelation marks a new chapter for the Afrobeats star, who is not only evolving musically but also learning to embrace life beyond work.
