Monday, February 24, 2025, marks a new political chapter in Ondo State as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa takes the oath of office for his first full term. His journey to the state’s highest office was marked by fierce political battles. As a former deputy governor to the late Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa faced opposition while his former boss was abroad for medical treatment. Despite resistance from certain government factions, he first became the acting governor and later the substantive governor following Akeredolu’s passing in December 2024.

Securing the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket for the November 16, 2024, election came with additional hurdles. Facing competition from 15 political parties, he ultimately won a landslide victory, securing over 366,000 votes and triumphing in all 18 local government areas. His closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), trailed with 117,000 votes.

As Aiyedatiwa embarks on a four-year tenure, expectations are high across security, agriculture, health, education, youth employment, and infrastructure. Since 1999, every Ondo governor has left behind at least one notable achievement.

  • Adebayo Adefarati (1999–2003) prioritized education and healthcare.
  • Olusegun Agagu (2003–2009) was known for infrastructure development.
  • Olusegun Mimiko (2009–2017) received praise for healthcare initiatives.
  • Rotimi Akeredolu (2017–2024) left a strong legacy in security, playing a key role in establishing Amotekun, a regional security network.

Aiyedatiwa now has the opportunity to define his legacy, focusing on completing ongoing projects, improving public services, and ensuring economic growth.

Not everyone is optimistic about the new administration. The PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, criticized Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, claiming he has been ineffective during his time as governor. According to Peretei, roads, hospitals, and schools have suffered neglect, warning that the next four years could be wasted opportunities.

Similarly, Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chairman, Gbenga Akinbuli, dismissed Aiyedatiwa’s victory, alleging electoral irregularities and vowing to challenge the results in court.

Responding to opposition criticisms, APC’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, reaffirmed that Aiyedatiwa’s election win was a true reflection of the people’s will. He emphasized the governor’s commitment to infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and youth empowerment.

During his campaign, Aiyedatiwa pledged to continue critical projects, improve security, and support agriculture. His administration plans to strengthen the Amotekun Corps, address rural development, and revamp technical education to provide skilled manpower.

Furthermore, Public affairs analyst Dr. Gbenga Abimbola believes Aiyedatiwa must focus on action over politics, ensuring the completion of Akeredolu-era projects and prioritizing education, security, and agriculture.

Also, With only one constitutional term to serve, Aiyedatiwa has a limited window to make an impact in ondo state. Will he rise to the challenge and carve his place in Ondo State’s history, or will he leave office as a missed opportunity? The coming years will tell.
