Lagos, Nigeria’s leading commercial hub, is once again demonstrating its position at the forefront of innovation as it hosts the first-ever Electric Boat Racing competition. The event, scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2025, will take place at the Lagos Sea behind the Civic Centre and has already attracted over 300 foreigners from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The futuristic boats, designed like fighter jets, run entirely on electric power, making them eco-friendly and sustainable. The competition brings together celebrity-backed teams competing for the title of “Champions of the Water”, while also promoting gender equality and raising awareness about marine ecosystem challenges. Each team is mixed-gender, showcasing inclusivity in the sport.

Several global icons are lending their support to the teams, including Steve Aoki, Marcelo Claure, Marc Anthony, Tom Brady, LeBron James, Virat Kohli, Rafael Nadal, Didier Drogba, and Will Smith. Their involvement has generated international buzz and positioned Lagos as a global stage for innovation and sustainability.

Speaking with BusinessDay, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, emphasized that the event reflects the city’s creativity, innovation, and commitment to sustainability.

“The sport is all about Lagos joining the rest of the world as a model mega city where businesses can thrive, where innovation can thrive,” Omotosho said.

He added: “It’s much more than a race. It’s about our culture, our economy, our GDP. This will boost the economy significantly. Already, some of the hotels around the venue are fully booked.”

Omotosho noted that the event will remain a permanent fixture on the Lagos sporting and cultural calendar, further boosting tourism and economic opportunities.

International Teams Excited About Lagos

Team Alula, backed by NBA legend LeBron James, confirmed they have raced in five cities this year, and Lagos is their latest stop. One of the team’s representatives said they are thrilled to be part of the event in Nigeria.

Patricia of Team Miami, racing with her partner Anthony from Monaco, expressed her excitement about being part of an international competition staged in Africa.

Sarah Price, another participant, said the championship has already been hosted in Monaco, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy, and Miami, and she looks forward to thrilling contests on Lagos waters this Saturday.

For Lagos, the event symbolizes more than just sport. It represents a bold step into conversations about sustainability, clean energy, and climate change, with the city positioning itself as a leader in eco-friendly innovation.

The 9am News report notes that beyond the competition, the event reinforces Lagos’ image as a mega city, attracting investment, promoting green initiatives, and showcasing Nigerian hospitality on a global scale.
