Celebrity chef Hilda Baci has revealed why she cut down her Guinness World Record attempt for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice from 250 bags to 200.
Speaking to newsmen at the venue, Baci explained that the adjustment was necessary due to the technical limitations of the crane and weighing scale, which could only support a maximum of 20,000 kilogrammes. She noted that the combined weight of the custom-made pot and the rice would have exceeded that threshold.
“The goal was that by the time I was done making 5,000 kilogrammes, I was hoping to achieve about 17,000 to 18,000 kilogrammes. Right now, if I include the weight of the pot, that’s about 20,000,” she said. “It’s safer for me to go below 20,000 kilogrammes so that my scale can carry it all at the same time, and basically that is why I had to cut down on the quantity.”
According to her, the 4,000 kilogrammes of rice cooked—equivalent to 200 bags—was still enough to feed 20,000 people.
Baci described the attempt as her most ambitious culinary project to date, revealing that it took almost a year of preparation. “Figuring out how to fabricate the pots took Mr. Ayo two months, and it took us about nine months to plan this event. Making the entire meal took almost nine hours,” she added.
She also emphasised that her motivation was beyond record-breaking. “I initially saw it as an opportunity to bring people together and feed as many as possible. Some of you came with your cooler, so we need to make sure everybody’s fed. We’re feeding the nation,” Baci said.
The event, supported by food brand Gino, attracted a massive crowd, including celebrities and dignitaries. Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, dancer Kaffy, and Ogun State First Lady Bamidele Abiodun were among those in attendance.
According to a 9am News report, the jollof feat not only showcased Nigerian cuisine on a global stage but also highlighted the growing role of food in uniting communities across the country.
