Amaechi Talks About His Role in ADC Coalition

Rotimi Amaechi explains how he and Kayode Fayemi helped form the ADC opposition coalition, while Fayemi denies leaving the APC.
Amaechi ADC Coalition

Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has revealed how he and former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, worked together to form a broad opposition coalition that eventually adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking during an X Spaces session titled ‘Weekend Politics’, Amaechi said the coalition idea began after a reconciliation meeting with Fayemi, held at the home of Nasiru Danu, alongside Salihu Mohammed Mustapha and others. According to him, they agreed to expand the plan to bring in more political figures.

The coalition now includes notable politicians such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former SGF Babachir Lawal, former Senate President David Mark, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi. Several PDP members have also defected to the ADC.

Amaechi explained that a consultant was engaged to study the political structure and INEC requirements to identify a suitable party. After considering other options like Action Alliance and Accord Party, the committee settled on the ADC because it agreed to give up its leadership for the coalition. He noted that as more groups joined, meetings were held in different locations, and the ADC became the chosen platform.

Fayemi Denies Leaving APC

Following the viral audio, Fayemi’s media office issued a statement denying his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His media aide, Ahmad Sajoh, said there is no credible evidence to confirm Amaechi’s statement and warned against relying on unverified social media reports. Fayemi, he said, remains a loyal APC leader in Ekiti State and has endorsed Governor Biodun Oyebanji for re-election under the APC.

The statement urged the public to treat any news about Fayemi with caution, especially if it originates solely from social media.
