President Tinubu re-elected as ECOWAS chairman

9am News Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu was recently re-elected as chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He was re-elected during the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of States and Government, held in the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria.

President Tinubu, who accepted re-election, appointed Senegal’s President to participate in the mediation with Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad. 9am News Nigeria also reported that Tinubu emphasized the need for regional cooperation to address security challenges.

9am News highlighted that President Tinubu urged regional member nations to meet their budgetary commitments to the regional body in order to adequately address security issues.

After been re-elected as Ecowas President, President Tinubu, who delivered the charge during the 65th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS, stated that significant financial resources are required to operationalize the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) to confront terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism.

The Nigerian President, whose one-year term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority is set to expire tomorrow, July 9, asked member nations to follow their financial responsibilities so that 9am News could meet the expectations and recommendations of its defense and finance ministers.

Ogasabi reports that President Tinubu contended that fulfilling the commitments will help stabilize the region and combat insecurity, and that by meeting their financial obligations, ECOWAS member states will demonstrate their commitment to regional security and cooperation, allowing the community to better address West Africa’s security challenges.

According to him, “Let me underscore that a peaceful and secure society is essential for achieving our potentials. As we move to operationalize the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) in combating terrorism, I must emphasize that the success of this plan requires not only strong political will, but also substantial financial resources,” Ogasabi quoted Tinubu as saying.

Ogasabi further noted that Tinubu stressed the importance of meeting the expectations and recommendations set forth by defense and finance ministers to combat insecurity and stabilize the region.
