The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its seven-day warning strike, just four days after it began, following a breakthrough in negotiations with the Federal Government.
The announcement was made by the National President of NANNM, Haruna Mamman, during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Mamman revealed that the decision was reached after an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s national executive council. During the meeting, the council reviewed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Federal Government and resolved to halt the strike in response to the government’s commitment to a time-bound implementation of all nine key demands.
Government Promises Action on Nine Key Demands
This latest development comes a day after NANNM leadership met with a federal delegation led by Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammad Pate. At the end of that meeting, Dr. Pate had hinted that the strike would be called off, citing significant progress in discussions.
Among the major demands listed by the association are:
- Gazetting of the scheme of service for nurses
- Upward review of nursing allowances
- Introduction of specialty allowances for specialist nurses
- Immediate employment of more nurses
- Better remuneration packages
- Creation of a Department of Nursing Services at the Federal Ministry of Health
The association began the strike on July 29, 2025, after the government failed to respond to a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025.
During the strike, public health facilities across Nigeria witnessed significant disruptions. Patients were left stranded, while many government hospitals experienced a near shutdown of essential services.
Minister of Labour, Muhammadu Dingyadi, had previously appealed to the striking nurses and midwives to reconsider their decision, stating that industrial action was not the best solution for resolving disputes in the health sector.
While the strike has now been suspended, Mamman emphasized that the association will closely monitor the Federal Government’s implementation of the agreed demands. He added that failure to act within the specified timeline could trigger further action.
The suspension of the strike is expected to bring much-needed relief to patients, health institutions, and families across Nigeria who have been affected by the ongoing disruption in healthcare services.
