In a bold move to promote tourism and cultural heritage in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced free public access to the iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Complex in Abeokuta from now until the end of September 2025.

According to a 9am News report, this initiative is part of efforts by the state government to stimulate cultural tourism, generate employment, and improve local commerce. The announcement came during the inauguration of the newly renovated Olumo Rock complex, now repositioned as a modern heritage destination.

Major Features of the Upgraded Complex

The revitalized tourist centre boasts several new features including:

  • A galleria with portraits of eminent Nigerians
  • A gazebo and restaurant serving both local and continental dishes
  • Shops selling adire fabrics, a traditional Yoruba tie-dye cloth
  • A standby generator powering newly installed elevators and other modern amenities

Governor Abiodun described Olumo Rock as more than just a natural monument. “It is a sanctuary of strength, a symbol of refuge, and a cultural identity for the Egba people,” he said. He emphasized that renovating the rock was not just about infrastructure, but about rekindling pride, reviving memory, and reaffirming roots.

Olumo Rock: More Than a Tourist Site

The governor declared Ogun a foremost destination of choice for global tourists, urging visitors from around the world to explore the state’s rich cultural landscape. “This renovation has transformed Olumo Rock from a historic relic into a modern heritage destination,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun also revealed plans to concession the facility to a reputable operator, ensuring its maintenance and further development. He said the complex would empower artisans and creatives, boost youth employment, and establish a thriving cultural and creative economy.

The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, reflected on the spiritual and historic significance of the rock. He noted that Olumo Rock served as a military observation post and a spiritual refuge in ancient times. The monarch lauded the governor for giving the centre a much-needed facelift.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, said the renovated site would attract more tourists and boost the state’s reputation as a cultural hub.

Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, CEO of Nike Art Gallery, projected a significant surge in tourism traffic and international recognition for the site. “Give it two years, and Olumo will become number one in the country,” she affirmed, promising international collaborations and job creation through arts and cultural exchanges.
