Afrobeats singer Magixx has sparked conversation in the Nigerian music scene after accusing fellow artists of faking their streaming numbers, stating bluntly that many are deceiving both the public and themselves.
In a direct tweet, the Mavin Records signee wrote:
“Y’all faking your numbers I hope you sleep well at night… keep deceiving your family members.”
The 9am News report reveals that the tweet quickly gained traction, drawing support from other artists and fans who have long suspected that manipulation of music charts and streaming data is rampant in the industry.

Blaqbonez Backs Magixx, Criticizes Industry Practices
Rapper Blaqbonez added fuel to the fire by echoing Magixx’s concerns. He described the current state of the industry as “damaged,” saying music charts no longer reflect talent or genuine public acceptance.
“The irreversible damage we done to our industry, one day it’d finally come crumbling down,” Blaqbonez tweeted.
“For now let’s keep acting like the charts mean anything more than a showcase of the people who can afford to buy it. It’s like iTunes in the 2000s all over again.”
The rapper criticized the pay-to-play system, suggesting that chart success now depends on financial muscle rather than merit or listener engagement.
Blaqbonez further expressed frustration using Ayra Starr’s track “Hot Body” as an example. Despite wide acclaim and commercial potential, he noted that the song hasn’t broken into the top 10 on Nigerian music charts, suggesting bias against artists who don’t engage in what he sarcastically termed “industry agriculture.”
“Ayra Hot Body never enter top 10 NG, when we know that song should be number 1 or top 3,” he wrote.
“But how dem go let am, when she never do industry agriculture.”
The phrase “industry agriculture” has since been interpreted by fans as a dig at behind-the-scenes deals and promotion tactics that artificially boost chart positions.
The comments by Magixx and Blaqbonez reflect growing concern among Nigerian artists about the integrity of the local music ecosystem. While streaming platforms and digital charts are intended to democratize access to success, critics argue that they are being manipulated by big players and gatekeepers, leaving talented voices underrepresented.
Music lovers and creatives are now calling for more transparency, fair metrics, and reform to ensure that authentic talent is recognized and rewarded on merit.
