President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, ahead of their crucial final match against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that all entitlements for players, coaches, and officials — covering matches up to and including the final scheduled for July 26 have been disbursed for immediate payment.

Dikko described the approval as a “policy in motion” that reflects a renewed commitment by President Tinubu’s administration to uphold the dignity and welfare of Nigerian athletes.

“This is the kind of sports administration we are building, one rooted in dignity, trust, and shared prosperity. Timely payments without drama or delays will now be the norm,” Dikko assured.

The announcement comes at a critical moment for the Super Falcons, who are seeking to clinch another continental title when they face hosts Morocco in what promises to be a decisive showdown.

D’Tigress to Benefit Too

In addition to the Super Falcons, the D’Tigress, Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, will also benefit from the renewed approach. As they prepare to begin their 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket campaign in Côte d’Ivoire, Dikko confirmed that they will receive improved allowances and match bonuses.

This policy shift marks a departure from past controversies over delayed payments and unpaid entitlements, issues that have often clouded Nigeria’s sporting achievements on the global stage.

‘A New Era for Nigerian Sports’

President Tinubu’s decision has been widely welcomed by sports stakeholders who see it as a sign of improved governance and accountability in sports administration.

“Future generations will appreciate these reforms in our sports sector,” Dikko added, expressing optimism that Nigeria’s national teams can now focus on delivering results without the distraction of unresolved payment disputes.

Sports analysts say the move will boost the morale of players and deepen trust between the government and athletes representing the country internationally.
