The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has approved the commencement of domestic operations by Enugu Air through an interim partnership with XEJet Airlines, marking a major milestone for the newly launched regional carrier.
According to a statement signed on Monday by NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, Enugu Air officially took off on July 7, 2025, at an inauguration ceremony attended by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
The new airline, which began with a fleet of three Embraer 170 aircraft seating about 76 passengers each, will initially operate under XEJet’s existing Air Operator Certificate (AOC) while it works to complete its own full certification process.
“This approval aligns with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s 5-Point Agenda aimed at promoting the growth of indigenous airlines, enhancing the ease of doing business, and deepening sectoral reforms,” the statement read, as captured in the 9am News report.
Flights Operated Under XEJet License
The NCAA explained that XEJet has successfully integrated the Embraer E170 aircraft into its Operations Specifications following a full variation process, which means XEJet is now authorised to operate scheduled domestic flights on behalf of Enugu Air under Nigeria’s five-phase certification framework.
Under the arrangement, ticket bookings are currently handled through the XEJet platform, accessible via a redirect link on Enugu Air’s official website.
Support for Indigenous Airlines
This interim partnership is in line with the Federal Government’s aviation reform strategy, which encourages the establishment of more viable indigenous airlines while maintaining rigorous safety and security oversight.
“The NCAA reaffirms its commitment to ensuring high standards of safety, security, and consumer protection, while fostering fair competition within Nigeria’s aviation sector,” the statement added.
As Enugu Air works towards securing its own independent Air Operator Certificate, the partnership with XEJet provides a practical path to building market presence and operational experience while adhering to regulatory requirements.
Industry analysts view the collaboration as a promising step toward boosting regional connectivity, creating local jobs, and expanding Nigeria’s domestic aviation landscape.
