Tragedy struck in the Idi Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Sunday when a one-storey building under construction collapsed, killing one construction worker and injuring three others.
The incident occurred around 3:30 pm at 96 Ishaga Road, opposite Idi Araba Central Mosque. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene following distress calls.
9am News report confirms that the building, still in the construction phase, suddenly gave way, trapping workers under the rubble.
The Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Territorial Office, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the casualty figures.
“So far, one person has been confirmed dead, while three others have been rescued alive. Search and rescue operations are ongoing,” Farinloye said in a statement.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Shakiru Amodu, also confirmed the fatality. “Unfortunately, one adult male has been recovered dead,” he told reporters.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, provided additional context in a statement on Sunday evening.
“A building under construction at the one-storey level suddenly collapsed at 96 Ishaga Road. Three adult males have been rescued with varying degrees of injury,” the statement read.
Emergency teams, including the Isolo Fire Station, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police, were on the ground for rescue efforts.
The injured victims received immediate medical attention on-site and were later transferred to nearby hospitals by LASAMBUS for further treatment.
As of the time of this report, search and rescue operations continue, with authorities working to ensure no additional victims are trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident adds to the growing concerns over building standards and regulatory compliance in Lagos, especially in densely populated areas like Mushin. The Lagos State Government has repeatedly emphasized the need for developers to adhere strictly to safety codes and approved building plans.
More updates will be provided as rescue operations progress and investigations into the cause of the collapse are concluded.
