Former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, has denied reports alleging his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Kyari described the rumours as “baseless” and “clear mischief,” asserting that he is currently enjoying a well-deserved rest following the recent dissolution of NNPCL’s management and board.
Kyari, who served for nearly six years as GCEO, reaffirmed his commitment to accountability and integrity:
“At present, I am taking a well-deserved rest after the dissolution of the management and board of the NNPCL, of which I was the Group Chief Executive. Having served the NNPC and NNPCL for 34 years—17 of those in management and the last 5 years and 9 months as GCEO—I had little time for leave of even two weeks.”
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that he always acted with the fear of God, mindful of his duty to both the Nigerian people and his faith.
Kyari criticized the spread of unverified claims, warning that such misinformation could harm Nigeria’s image and deter potential investors:
“Disinformation does not serve anyone’s purpose, whether the NNPCL or the country at large, as it risks sending the wrong signals to investors and the international community.”
He urged the media to practice caution and verify stories before publication, adding that he remains available to respond to all lawful inquiries.
