The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to take legal action against Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other influential party members who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following a marathon six-hour meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, PDP’s leadership instructed its National Legal Adviser to initiate proceedings to reclaim what it described as the party’s stolen mandate in Delta State.

According to a communiqué released after the meeting, the party expressed strong dissatisfaction with the defection of its Delta leaders to the ruling APC and announced immediate steps to stabilize and reorganize its structure in the state. As part of this move, the South-South Zonal Chairman, Emma Ogidi, was appointed to oversee party affairs in Delta.

Speaking after the meeting, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum stated:

“We have instructed the national legal adviser to recover our mandate that they have taken away. The fortune of this party cannot be left in the hands of our adversaries.”

Damagum also announced the dissolution of all existing party structures in Delta State, citing mass defections as justification. The party noted that the defection of Governor Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and a wide circle of commissioners, local government chairmen, and grassroots leaders had significantly undermined PDP’s presence in the state.

The 9am News report confirms that on April 23, 2025, the defectors were officially welcomed into the APC by senior party figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

Also defecting was former Delta Governor and PDP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, in what analysts describe as a major political realignment that has shaken PDP’s long-standing dominance in the oil-rich Delta region.

The APC described the wave of defections not merely as a shift but as a “movement”, positioning it for significant gains ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a further move to reinforce its internal structure, the NWC approved recommendations from the PDP Governors’ Forum and scheduled its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for May 28, while announcing that the PDP National Convention will hold from August 28 to 30, 2025.
