Thousands of enthusiastic supporters of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gathered on Monday at the Cenotaph in Asaba, Delta State, ahead of his much-anticipated official defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The venue was filled to capacity as top national and state political officeholders, alongside APC party leaders and stakeholders, took their seats in anticipation. Vice President Kashim Shettima was present to witness the ceremony, underlining the event’s political significance.

The atmosphere at the Cenotaph was electric, with loyalists waving APC flags and chanting slogans such as, “We are all BATified and Sherrified” and “Anywhere Sheriff goes, we follow.”

The rally symbolized strong grassroots support for Governor Oborevwori as he prepared to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and align with the ruling APC.

Local vendors also capitalized on the occasion, recording brisk sales of APC-themed merchandise, including bangles, hats, mufflers, shirts, flags, and stickers along the roads leading to the venue. The bustling roadside commerce added color and excitement to the day.

The defection of Governor Oborevwori, a major political event in Delta State, is expected to reshape the political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political analysts suggest that his move, backed by a large number of supporters, could significantly boost the APC’s strength in the South-South region, traditionally considered a stronghold of the PDP.
