The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of mobile police officers from VIPs, directing a major shake-up of the Police Mobile Force (PMF). The move, aimed at enhancing national security and operational efficiency, was announced during a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on April 22, 2025.
According to a 9am News report, this reform forms part of broader efforts to restore the PMF to its original purpose as the elite tactical unit of the Nigeria Police Force, trained to swiftly respond to violent threats, riots, and emergencies across the country.
In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP noted that PMF operatives have been diverted from their core security functions to serve as escorts and guards for private individuals and VIPs a misuse that has weakened the unit’s effectiveness.
The IGP rolled out a series of strong reform actions, including:
- Immediate withdrawal of PMF personnel from all unauthorized VIP deployments.
- Mandatory quarterly training to improve professionalism, ethics, and operational standards.
- Deployment of fully equipped, combat-ready units across all PMF Squadrons for rapid tactical support.
- Accountability for PMF Commanders, who will now be held responsible for the conduct and deployment of their personnel.
“The Police Mobile Force must be repositioned to confront internal threats, not serve as status symbols for privileged individuals,” Egbetokun stated, emphasizing the need for discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence within the Force.
To support the PMF transformation, the IGP also outlined plans to introduce new leadership strategies, mentorship programs, and capacity-building initiatives. These reforms are expected to bring the PMF in line with global best practices, ensuring it remains a dependable and disciplined tactical unit.
During his address, Egbetokun commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for continued support and also acknowledged the contributions of international partners in enhancing technical and operational capabilities of the Nigerian Police.
He urged PMF Squadron Commanders to see the reform not just as a directive, but as a professional and moral responsibility, stressing that the Police Force is committed to safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians.
This move is likely to affect several high-profile individuals who have relied on PMF operatives for personal protection. However, the IGP’s directive marks a strong stand toward ending the misuse of security resources in a country grappling with security challenges ranging from banditry to insurgency.
Security analysts have praised the decision, calling it a necessary step in reclaiming operational focus and improving public confidence in the Police Force’s ability to respond to emergencies.
As the Police Mobile Force begins its transformation, Nigerians are watching closely to see how this reform will impact internal security operations and the structure of VIP protection moving forward.
