Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), George Muoghalu, has clinched the Labour Party governorship ticket for the November 8, 2025 election in Anambra State, marking a significant step in the build-up to one of the most anticipated elections in the South-East.
Muoghalu secured the ticket with a decisive 575 votes at the party’s primary held on Saturday in Awka, the state capital. His only challenger, John Nwosu, who earlier withdrew from the race, still received 19 votes — likely from already-cast ballots.
The primary, which took place at Finotel Hotel, was observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Labour Party’s electoral team, and accredited observers. Delegates were reportedly orderly throughout the process, from accreditation through to the counting of votes.
In his acceptance speech, George Muoghalu expressed gratitude to the party for the trust reposed in him and promised that the confidence would not be misplaced. He described the victory as a “defining moment” for the people of Anambra.
“This is not just about an election. It’s a movement to build a more prosperous and inclusive Anambra. The defining moment has come,” Muoghalu stated.
Muoghalu is no stranger to politics in Anambra, having been a long-time political figure in the state and a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he also contested for the governorship ticket in the past.
The Labour Party candidate will face a formidable challenge in the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who was returned unopposed as the APGA consensus candidate during the party’s own primary held on the same day in Awka. Soludo secured over 300 affirmative votes, cementing his place as the party’s standard bearer.
Soludo, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, is seeking a second term in office. His re-nomination sets up a potentially intense electoral battle between APGA, the ruling party in the state, and rising opposition forces like the Labour Party.
With the APC and LP primaries concluded — Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and George Muoghalu emerging as their respective candidates — the November 8 governorship election in Anambra promises to be a three-way contest among APGA, APC, and LP.
As the Labour Party continues to expand its grassroots presence in the South-East, especially following its strong performance in the 2023 general elections, Muoghalu’s candidacy could shake the established political order in Anambra.
