The Premier League will implement semi-automated offside technology on April 12, 2025, to enhance VAR accuracy and speed.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology

The Premier League has officially announced the introduction of semi-automated offside technology, set to debut on Saturday, April 12, 2025 (Match Round 32). The new system, developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, aims to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and consistency of offside decisions.

According to a statement released on PremierLeague.com on Tuesday, the semi-automated offside technology automates key aspects of offside decision-making to assist the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The system will provide more precise placement of the virtual offside line using optical player tracking while generating virtual graphics to improve both the in-stadium and broadcast experience.

This implementation follows extensive non-live testing in the Premier League and successful live trials in the FA Cup. The technology is expected to reduce delays in offside calls while maintaining the integrity of the decision-making process.

With this latest advancement, the Premier League joins other top European leagues that have adopted semi-automated offside to improve officiating standards and ensure fairness in the game.
