Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed the formation of a political coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this revelation during a press conference held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.
The press conference, which brought together key political stakeholders and opposition figures, was originally convened to address the controversial State of Emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu earlier this week.
When asked directly whether the emerging coalition would serve as the major opposition force against the APC in the upcoming elections, Atiku gave a clear response:
“Yes.”
His confirmation signaled a major political realignment as opposition figures ramp up efforts to unseat the APC-led government in 2027.
During the event, Atiku and other political leaders strongly condemned Tinubu’s State of Emergency declaration in Rivers State, calling it an unconstitutional act meant to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
While the full details of the coalition remain undisclosed, the move suggests that opposition parties are uniting to mount a stronger challenge in the next election cycle.
With Nigeria’s political landscape shifting, all eyes are on Atiku and other opposition leaders as they outline their next steps. Will this coalition be able to mobilize effectively and challenge the APC’s dominance in 2027?
