Rivers Governor Vows to Implement Supreme Court Verdict

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledges to implement the Supreme Court verdict nullifying the local government election
Rivers Supreme Court

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of the state that his administration will fully comply with the Supreme Court verdict regarding the recent political disputes after obtaining and reviewing the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment.

The apex court, in a ruling delivered on Friday, March 1, 2025, declared the local government election held on October 5, 2024, invalid, directing that fresh elections be conducted in the state.

In a statewide broadcast on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Governor Fubara disclosed that he had met with his legal team, who expect to receive the CTC of the judgment by Friday, March 7, 2025. He assured the public that the government would study the verdict and implement it in line with constitutional provisions.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the governor directed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to immediately assume control of the 23 local government councils across Rivers State. The civil servants will oversee the councils until fresh elections are conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

Governor Fubara instructed the outgoing local government chairmen to officially hand over power to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025, in line with the court’s directive.

Commitment to Rule of Law

Despite expressing disagreement with the judgment, Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and constitutional governance.

“Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government,” he stated.

He further assured residents that his government would continue to prioritize peace, security, and good governance despite the ongoing political uncertainties.

Supreme Court’s Directive on State Funds

In a related development, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other government agencies from releasing funds to Rivers State until the government complies with previous court orders.

The ruling was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, as the court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Fubara challenging the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule. The court directed the Assembly to resume sitting immediately.

Governor Fubara called on Rivers residents to remain calm and law-abiding while assuring them of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people.

“Our dear State seems to be back in trying times, but I urge everyone to remain calm and peacefully go about their legitimate daily activities as we continue to advance our responsibilities to the citizens,” he appealed.
