All security aides attached to the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, have been allegedly withdrawn with immediate effect. The sudden development comes amid speculations that Meranda may resign from her position following mediation efforts by top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.
9am News gathered that as of Thursday morning, police operatives and other security personnel attached to the Speaker and the House of Assembly were withdrawn, leaving the Speaker without any protection. The move has raised concerns about Meranda’s vulnerability amid the ongoing leadership tussle within the state assembly.
A source close to the Speaker’s camp confirmed the withdrawal, stating that all security aides assigned to Meranda had been pulled out without prior notice. The source described the situation as worrisome, adding that the Speaker was now exposed to risks.
The withdrawal of security details follows recent intervention efforts by APC heavyweights, including former Osun State governor Chief Bisi Akande and former Ogun State governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba. The duo led a mediation panel that met with key stakeholders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina last Sunday.
Reports from the meeting suggest that the panel recommended the resignation of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, while also advising Meranda to step down for a new lawmaker from Lagos West to assume leadership of the House.
Confirming the development to 9am News, the spokesperson for Mojisola Meranda, Ganzallo Victor, expressed uncertainty over the reasons behind the security withdrawal.
“We don’t know why the authorities have done that, but all the police officers and other security details attached to her have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources from the Obasa camp revealed that all security aides attached to the former Speaker had been fully restored as of Thursday morning, raising further speculation about the power dynamics within the Lagos Assembly.
The political crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has deepened in recent weeks following the removal of Obasa as Speaker and the appointment of Mojisola Meranda as his replacement. The APC leadership’s intervention is seen as an attempt to restore calm ahead of the 2027 general elections.
